All classes and workshops are held in our shop at 1 The Old Orchard, Pot House Hamlet, Silkstone, Barnsley, S75 4JU.

To book your place, please either give us a call or an email to arrange payment. The full cost of the class is required at the time of booking, which is non-refundable if you cancel your place within 30 days before the class. If cancelling before 30 days prior, 50% is refundable. Swapping dates is only possible 30 days prior to the class booked on, otherwise the full cost will be due again.

In the unlikely event that a class is cancelled you will be refunded in full.

Basic Techniques Cake Decorating

£110 – 10am to 5pm (7`` real cake)

Want to feel more confident about decorating cakes for family and friends? Come along to our 1-day cake decorating class and learn all the basics, plus the professionals’ tips and tricks!

You will decorate and take home a single-tier tea party-style celebration cake (as shown), covering the following skills:

  • masking with buttercream
  • using Massa Ticino sugar paste to get perfect sharp edges
  • embossing
  • using cutters
  • making a large sugar paste bow and other decoration
  • piping with royal icing
  • making a simple rose

Skill level: easy/moderate/patience required

Christmas Baubles Workshop

£40 - 3 hours


Tuesday 11th December 6pm – 9pm (one place available)

Saturday 15th December 10am – 1pm (fully booked)

Learn how to cover a spherical cake in marzipan and sugar paste and decorate it to look like a beautiful Christmas bauble. You’ll get two sphere fruit cakes so you can try out 2 different Christmassy designs – keep them to admire or give them as Christmas presents!

Skill level: easy/moderate/patience required

Sharp Edges Workshop

£90 – 10am - 4pm (8″ real cake, 6″ dummy tier)

If you’re struggling to get smooth sides on your cakes, and want to get in on the secret of sharp edges then here is the class for you!


You will decorate and take home a two-tier cake (as shown), covering the following skills:

  • Make and use chocolate ganache to create a base for your sharp edges
  • Use Massa Ticino sugar paste to cover a real cake, a 6″ dummy tier and a board with sugar paste
  • Use royal icing to stack 2 tiers
  • Learn how to properly dowel your tiers
  • Add finishing touches with ribbon

French Macarons Workshop

£50 – 3 hours

Ever fancied having a go at making these infamous little French delicacies?

Their reputation for being tricky to make is well-earned, but at Joanna Rose Cakes we can take you through the process step-by-step, from making a glossy Italian meringue, piping perfect macaron rounds, and filling them with delicious ganaches.

You’ll get to take home at least a dozen macarons in 3 different flavours.

Skill level: easy/moderate/patience required

Chocolate Drip Cake Workshop

£110 - 10am - 4pm (6`` real cake)


Saturday 16th February (4 places available)

In this workshop we will cover a range of skills to be able to make your own ‘drip’ cakes with your own handmade chocolates. You will learn how to mask a a 6″ chocolate fudge cake in your choice of coloured buttercream, make ganache and learn the timings for the perfect drip, then learn how to temper chocolate and make hand dipped truffles and shards, which you will then use to decorate your cake.

Skills covered includes:

  • Masking with buttercream
  • Making two types of ganache
  • Timing of ganache for ‘drips’ and extra piped decoration
  • How to temper chocolate
  • Piping, capping and dipping ganache filled chocolate truffles
  • Making chocolate shards
  • Using your chocolate to decorate

Skill level: easy/moderate/patience required

Introduction to Chocolate Workshop

£75 – 3 hours


Sunday 17th February 10am – 1pm (6 places available)

Learn the science behind tempering chocolate and make a range of Belgian chocolate goodies to take home and impress your friends!


Covering the following skills:

  • How to temper chocolate (demonstrated)
  • Making and piping fresh cream ganache
  • Capping, dipping and decorating truffles
  • Using cocoa butter transfer sheets
  • Making flavoured chocolate ‘shards’

You’ll get to take home a box of 12 truffles in 3 different flavours, a bag of Cookies and Cream shards, and 3 Belgian chocolate lollipops.

Vintage Cupcakes

£40 – 2.5 hours


Tuesday 8th January 6pm – 8.30pm (5 places available)

Saturday 2nd February 10am – 12.30pm (2 places available)

This is a relaxed and informal class, from which you will be able to take home 6 beautifully decorated vintage-style cupcakes.

In this class we will cover the following skills:

  • Learn to pipe and ice a cupcake with buttercream
  • Icing a cupcake with sugarpaste
  • Using different types of cutters
  • Making sugar flowers
  • Embossing sugar paste

Modern Sugar Flowers Workshop

£110 – 10am to 5pm


Sunday 3rd February (1 place available)

You will be provided with a pre-covered 6″ dummy cake and make a range of sugar flowers to decorate (as shown), covering the following skills:

  • Using a range of cutters
  • Practise frilling using two methods
  • Making wired flowers
  • Using stamens
  • Forming and shaping petals
  • Using florist tape and edible glue
  • Learning how to attach and display your flowers

Flowers included: roses, closed peony, rose leaves, freesia, berries

Skill level: easy/moderate/patience required

What you need to bring: a packed lunch

Children's Easter Cupcakes

£25 - 2 hours

This relaxed class introduces children to basic decorating skills to replicate at home, decorating 6 Easter themed cupcakes.

Skills covered includes:

  • Piping with buttercream
  • Using sugar paste to make decorations
  • Using shaped cutters
  • Hand making figures/decorations
  • Using chocolate treats to decorate

Suitable for children aged 8+

Skill level: easy/moderate/patience required

What you need to bring: an apron
